Raglan Castle62 viewsAlso seen as Rhaglan, the Welsh spelling of the name, this was the castle we spent a weekend at for an SCA event. It will spoil us for all future event sites.

Moated keep49 viewsI thought it was odd that the main keep was outside the innermost walls of this castle. Access to this keep was through the castle and across the bridge seen. There were goldfish swimming in the moat.

SCA encampment169 viewsGreg and I stayed in the green wedge tent that belongs to some friends. This picture was taken from the top of the keep. There were lots of stairs between the bridge to the keep and the top of the keep. I did this climb twice on Saturday and I feel it in my legs today (Sunday).

Front gate93 viewsThis picture was also taken from the top of the keep.

86 viewsI had hoped that the top of the keep would be a good place to get video of the fighting, but the walls were too thick to see down where the fighting took place.

Inside the keep93 viewsI found out later that this castle was sieged and surrendered in 1646. After the castle was surrendered, they deliberately dismanteled two walls of the keep to prevent anyone else from living in the castle. Stone was taken to be used in other buildings. I can only imagine how this castle would look today if not taken apart. There is even some of the white facing that they used at the time remaining in some areas.

Carving84 viewsThis carving currently overlooks one of the courtyards, but originally would have been in or near the gallery on the second floor.

White walls95 viewsHere there remains some of the finish that was put onto the walls. It gives an idea of what the castle might have looked like rather than just the grey stone it is now.
